No Pride in Pinkwashing

February 18 @ 5:00 PM

How corporations and regimes use queer and trans people to cover up human rights violations, and what we can do about it. Organised by Thanet Queers in Solidarity.

Join our terrific panel of speakers to understand more about pinkwashing and what we can do to counter it, in Margate and beyond. Queer and trans liberation is deeply connected to freedom for all people. Yet some corporations and regimes that are involved in serious human rights abuses have tried to co-opt pride marches, queer symbols and messaging to whitewash their own complicity in oppression and exploitation.

Pinkwashing takes many forms, from corporate sponsorship of Pride and other queer events, to far-right groups and parties demonising religious minorities by falsely pitting our freedom against one another. States are also complicit – there is a troubling history of governments cynically positioning themselves as safe havens for trans and queer people while brutalising oppressed people, including the oppression of people in Palestine. How can we consistently reject all forms of oppression, bigotry and exploitation, and shape solidarities through the rejection of pinkwashing?
